Have a Plan B attitude.
Why are some weddings fun and happy and others a struggle? In my opinion. And I have a few thoughts on this, but the top two would be logistical and emotional.
In my experience, it’s all about the personalities at play and that can range from the couple themselves their families and friends, wedding party or your vendor team.
This is all about who you hire. It is very important that you hire professionals that know weddings.
As a wedding planner, some of the biggest stressors that I have seen on the day have to deal with the weather.
I encourage you to talk to your planner or talk amongst your family and create a plan B, Have a plan B attitude. Well before the day. And what I mean by that is, yes, you have planned an amazing day with your planner. Yes, you have the details. You have everything laid out.
But then I want you to take time and talk about what ifs. It is amazing. And I work with my clients to talk about what ifs before the wedding day, so if one of those what ifs happens. We already have a plan in place and we’re jumping into action and our couples aren’t stressed about it. They were like, You know what? It’s raining outside. Patrice and her team are going to the what if, the plan B, So have a plan B in place to know. What would this look like if this were to happen? Always solutions, never problems.

Make sure you hire vendors that have experience with weddings, even though you don’t hire a planner or coordinator. These vendors are going to come together as a team and make sure that your day is everything that you dreamed up. Two, make sure you communicate what you want and how you want your day to be. Also, it’s very important to know the vibe and that happy feeling and the love in the air.
It all comes from you and your energy. So let loose, relax, have fun, show your love and it’ll all come together. And you’re going to have such a fun, as perfect as possible wedding.

I think it comes down to personalities and not your personality every day, but the person that you bring to that wedding on that day in that moment has a lot to do with how well the day goes.
So for couples, really be in the moment, understand that things are going to go perfectly. Trust your vendor team and let us do our best for you.

Logistically, my weddings that will go amazing and have just happy love energy or weddings that had a planner. I know I’m biased, I’m a planner. And not only just a planner to help with the logistics, but a planner that united the vendor team. The ways that we do that just quick and easy are communicating with the team as a whole and making sure that your vendors have what they need. They’re supported, they’re heard. Any adjustments or changes that they’ve needed are made and that you kind of powwow together and make sure that everybody knows each other and can serendipitously work together in collaboration on the day.
So logistically, those weddings that have had that experience have gone much better than others. Now, emotionally, I think the number one thing that couples can really be mindful of is having realistic expectations, knowing that, yes, there is a vision and there is a plan in place, but there’s probably something that’s going to go wrong.
That’s going to be a more windy day than you thought or cooler day than you thought. And just being in the moment, taking it for what it is and keeping the true intention and the energy on the celebration coming together with your significant other’s family and friends and really celebrating the unity of the two of you guys should be at the forefront of your focus.
And don’t worry about the logistics. Know that your vendors have got you. What will be will be. Obviously, we have a plan that we’re going to carry out and follow, but I always empower my couples to stay present in the moment and just float through the wedding. That’s going to give you a better picture. It’s going to give you a better feel, and just an overall better experience.

I have been asked this so many times... does the wedding industry inflate prices when they hear it's a wedding?
Here is my honest answer (as a former wedding photographer)... NO. Did I charge more for a wedding than a 50th birthday party or a family portrait session? Yes, absolutely. I charged A LOT more for a wedding.
Was I taking advantage of the emotional sell? Absolutely not.
The main reasons I charged more for a wedding were: the unseen amount of work involved in the 12+ months leading up to the wedding, the skill level needed on the day, the INTENSE pressure to create perfect "portfolio level work" no matter what the reality of the situation- but mostly it is to compensate for the time AFTER the wedding in post production.
Little known fact about wedding photography - the real job is sitting at a computer editing photos. Photographers spend many hours behind the computer carefully selecting and editing photos. They make adjustments, crop, and adjust colors to ensure each image it's best. Don't forget the time it takes for batching, renaming, importing, exporting and uploading the photos and preparing them for delivery.
Do you think this justifies why photographers charge more for weddings than for other types of shoots?
Couldn’t agree more! And on the videography side its an absolute ton of data + editing discipline.
Its a double sided coin- weddings are extremely high pressure but also high reward when we nail it.
Our products (photo video) in particular are the only thing that genuinely will last forever . Having fun and ALSO nailing the product is worth the price of entry and frankly more.
